Eleos Health is pleased to announce a new partnership with The Harris Project Inc. (THP) to ensure fidelity to Encompass, one of only a select few evidence-based treatment models for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders in adolescents and young adults. Eleos Health will bring its voice-based artificial intelligence (AI) insights to six behavioral health organizations who are implementing Encompass.
Eleos Health’s platform will run in the background of the therapy session and then using its proprietary AI model, code the session to determine whether the therapist delivered the Encompass model as expected. Without the aid of technology, ensuring fidelity to evidence-based treatment models is time-consuming. It requires clinicians to record the session and then at least two researchers to assess fidelity. Over time, using human coders becomes unsustainable and limits scalability.
THP, founded by Stephanie Marquesano after losing her son to an accidental overdose, focuses on the prevention and treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Recognizing the gap between the research on these illnesses and the availability of effective treatment, THP received funding from WMCHealth to pilot Encompass at six behavioral health organizations in New York which began in October 2020. Due to the success of the pilot, the Westchester Community Foundation, a division of the New York Community Foundation, has funded an expansion of the Encompass pilot and use of the Eleos Health platform.
Stephanie Marquesano said, “It is exciting to see the potential Eleos Health brings to our multi-provider Encompass effort. As we expand the number of providers and clinicians offering Encompass, Eleos Health works directly with those agencies to support the critical quality assurance piece in a streamlined and consistent way.”
Dr. Shiri Sadeh-Sharvit, Eleos Health’s Chief Clinical Officer, added: “As a therapist you are required to assess and address many issues that come up in the session, especially when the client engages in high-risk behaviors. Naturally, this reduces the therapist’s ability to adhere to a specific model. Eleos provides AI-empowered feedback that help the provider review their work, assess their strengths as well as areas for professional development and consultation.”
A partnership with Eleos Health will allow THP to continue to support use of and disseminate the model while ensuring fidelity. The de-identified data collected from the partnership with Eleos Health will also allow THP to demonstrate proof of concept. The goal is to provide real-world data on the use of the model in order to spread it across New York.
Encompass is an evidence-based treatment developed by Dr. Paula Riggs and her clinical research team at the University of Colorado School of Medicine to address co-occurring disorders in adolescents and young adults. Consisting of 12-16 weekly individual therapy sessions, Encompass utilizes a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement, and contingency management to help young adults acquire new skills and coping strategies.
